21 Days Silent Yogic Retreat based on Rasa Vigyan: The Science of Inner Emotional Engineering and Conscious Living

This retreat is designed for overall wellbeing at physical , emotional and spiritual realities of life for every kind of person. In current time, people living in Cities, working in corporate or busy business setup , or tied up in emotional strangulation in relationship, are always feeling a need of fresh breath. The puzzled mind is a tired mind and always looks for itself to be solved but don’t understand its own complexities. Our this retreat is designed for such people, who wish resolve some inner issue Or are undergoing some stress, anxiety, brain-storming at their relationship level. Our retreat is a solution to come onto self understanding by relaxing the mind to its own original silent state of relaxation.

In furtherance of above, have we ever thought, in true terms, that who we are?, what are we made of?, why we behave the way we always behave. How is our character and personality built-up? How our emotions work within us? One moment we Love, second moment we laugh or we cry or we feel sad or happy. We just act or react but we usually never ask ourselves that as to why we always become a victim of such mood-swing(s)?? Why do we become helpless victims of our inner emotional fluctuations /changes??

There could be an endless series of questions, which we usually don’t ask ourselves. We simply keep on repeating the same habit patterns, and never really ask ourselves the reason behind our inner psychological behavioural patterns. Our relationships goes on toss, we lose the most loving ties. In worst case scenario, we go to doctors and are ready to pay hefty fee to Psychologists but are not willing to actually see inside of our self our own inner projections & reflections of life.

We are made up of emotions and different existential elements of life. In Hindu culture, it is every human beings desire to get Moksha or Nirvana, so that one should get freedom from all the worldly affairs of the life for once and all and never again become a victim of this vicious circle called Physical life. They want to cross the ‘Bhav-Sagar’ of life means the ‘cosmic ocean of emotions’. Bhav also means ‘happening’ or ‘Occurring’. In the given context, Bhav denotes an unbreakable chain of thoughts and emotions which is happening/occurring in our inner subtle world.

We usually know our inner psychology either as moods or emotions or thoughts, or ideas or opinions or memories of past and imaginations for future but ancient Indian research has gonemore deep and has brought out a subtler level of core energy behind our emotions, called ‘Rasas’.

The Sanskrit word Rasa means "the essence of emotion," as well as having more literal meanings such as "taste," "water," "juice," "essence," and ultimately "bliss." Rasa is the subtlest kind of energy that is partly physical and partly mental in existence. It importantly abridges the connection between body and mind that affects our thoughts and emotions. As entire universe is made up of energy, Rasa affects our emotions just like gravity affects our body. Rasa is the genesis of all that is inside and outside, the state of feeling of both the self and the universe.

Types of Inner bodies

As per Yog-Sutras coded by ancient sage ‘Patanjali’, we are manifestation of 5 levels of different bodies, duly named as below:

Annamaya Sharir

Physical body
Made of food and all earth-water elements.

Pranamaya Sharir

Pranic Body
Made of ‘Prana’, life force.

Manas Sharir

Mental and Emotional body
Covers all Rasas, emotions, thoughts, memories, desires, ideas, opinions, collection of information etc.

Vigyanmaya Sharir

IPsychic Body
This is our process of thinking/wisdom/
true intelligence.

Ananadmaya Sharir

Centre of being Self
Aatman, Self, Samadhi, Turiya

Ancient Indian tradition recognizes below nine principals as chief ‘Rasas’ of life that relates quite clearly to our moods & emotions (our third body):

Original Sanskrit Name Nearest English Meaning Related Emotions
Shringara Love Beauty, aesthetic Sentiment, Devotion
Hasya Joy Humor, Laughter, Sarcasm
Adbhuta Wonder Curiosity, astonishment, Mystery
Shanta Calmness Peace, Relaxation, Rest
Raudra Anger Violation, irritation, stress
Veerya Courage Heroism, Determination, Confidence
Karuna Compassion Pity, sympathy, dullness, sadness
Bhayankara Fearful Terror, anxiety, nervousness, worry
Vibhatsa Disgust Depression, Dissatisfaction, Self-pity
shiva

Above nine emotions can be further segregated into Rajas, Tamas and Sattva emotions. Only ‘Shanta’ is the ‘Sattva’ one, while Raudra, Karuna, Vibhatsa, Bhayankara are ‘Tamas’ Emotions in nature. Tamas emotions have a quality to made us shrink, heavy, possessive and ego centric. On the other side, Shringara, Hasya, Adbhuta and Veerya are four emotions, which are ‘Rajas’ by nature and made us expanding, lighter, open towards others, inner bliss.

All the emotions are interconnected or interwoven with their partner emotions. If Rajas emotions are touched, then they bring other category of emotions too at front. Same way, if any of Tamas emotion is happening, it will start juggling the other related emotions too. This interplay of all different emotions is called, ‘Bhav-Sharir’ or ‘Emotional Body’.

Once we understand that none of the action can go beyond our emotional line, then we can also understand that emotions doesn’t come up alone, they come up as ‘Vichara’, in English called, ‘thoughts’. Thoughts have no limits. They just belong to their connected emotion. This thought level happening inside us is called, ‘ManasSharir’ or ‘Thought Body’.

Somewhere, behind both the layers of thought body and emotional body, we are seeing everything and contemplating about right or wrong, good or bad, beautiful or ugly, this process is simply called, ‘Understanding’ ‘thinking’or our ‘Intellectual body’.

Rasa is the essence of a set of emotions and moods that belong to the same "family." When a Rasa is present for some time, its energy affects the body and mind in such a way that one of the members of its family of emotions is manifested.

Rasas are themselves clearly defined as core energies of the connected or resulting emotions (Bhavas). They can be said as core emotional energies which manifest itself in other related varieties of emotions and their understanding is affected by personal and cultural backgrounds.

Whether, it is our home or office or we are with our family, friends or office colleagues, our behaviour, emotional maturity with them helps us in living a conscious relationship with everyone. To be able to understand the beauty of life outside, we have to cultivate the art of understanding the beauty of inner being.

At AkaalYoga School

we discuss such pearls of wisdom in length and details with our fellow travellers who visit us as students as our retreat guest.

Concept of Emotional Fasting as ‘True Sadhana’

A great mystic and philosopher of Armenia named Gurdjieff once said that, ‘Conscious faith is freedom, emotional faith is slavery and mechanical faith is foolishness’.

‘A man will renounce any pleasures but he will not give up his suffering’.

Likewise, Buddha in his very first discourse after enlightenment also said that, “Life is a pain, a sorrow.”

We as Humans, the highest known race amongst all the past and present creatures of this planet, have earned and created everything to make ourselves busy and happy and still creating more and more in search of some core happiness called, ‘ultimate bliss or ‘joy’. We have written big scientific scriptures and found the subtlest most core of the life but not able to keep ourselves in the relaxing state of being which is desireless, thoughts and emotions free ]. To understand that basic reason behind this dissatisfaction in life, we would have to touch the core of our inner being.

As per ancient Indian traditions, there were two types of paths for Yoga-Sadhna, one for people who are living and working among the family & society and second for those who left everything and world to work on their own inner journey. Rasa Vigyan, is an art and science, equally important for both types of seekers.

Rasas are the core of our emotional being and they are like a variety of colours. All colours have their own presence and beauty. We can-not deny any and we should not too but it is also important for us to understand this chaos, this internal emotional drama which leads our whole life and manipulate us from living the life as the most beautiful experience for ever. Unless we see every emotional turbulence, shift and changes with awareness and make our self aware of our internal monologue, it is very hard to understand self and others. Living with awareness is something we call, ‘Conscious Living.’

Rasas are the essential and core driving force of our existence, hence, Rasa Vigyan as a subject is needed to be learned and understood to apply it in our daily habits and patterns of life, to use them consiously rather than be controlled by themg ,. This learning practice is called ‘Rasa Sadhana or Emotional Fasting’.

Emotional Fasting offers increased control over the Rasas through:

• Understanding the relationships between different Rasas, and between Rasas and the body and various aspects of life.

• Exercises that teach Rasa control and increase real understanding of each Rasa, through a kind of emotional fasting.

Rasa Sadhana is "Rasa-fasting" in the sense that it includes fasting from or on specific emotions.

shiva

For example, we first promise ourselves that for a day or a week or longer we will not get involved with one of the less desirable Rasas, such as Anger, Fear, Sadness, or Disgust. When the emotion surfaces it will not be suppressed, but properly analyzed; that alone will render it largely powerless. With the aid of some specific techniques that often involve the body, the energy of the Rasa can be more fully dissolved. The promise made in the Sadhana will provide us with the willpower to do so in any case, because to fail means to hurt the ego and when the ego gets involved the Rasa stands no chance. Through such regular exercise, we rapidly learn that we really can master these emotions quite effortlessly.

Rasas are the essence of our emotions that exist in both the body and the mind. The tantric tradition recognizes nine Rasas that represent our basic emotions: Love, Joy, Wonder, Courage, Calmness, Anger, Sadness, Fear, and Disgust. A study of the Rasas provides us with an objective language for examining our emotions and increasing our emotional intelligence. Those who practice Emotional Fasting learn to overcome negative emotions in order to pursue better health, enhanced spiritual growth, and enduring happiness. Our emotions are continuously affected by the interplay of our senses, the elements, food, and the life force in our body.

At AkaalYoga, our mentors, have evolved techniques in the form of practical physiological and philosophical tools from tantric and ayurvedic traditions, to work out on all hidden emotions so that one can intelligently see and interface with them.

We discuss the nature and purpose of each Rasa and how we can strengthen or weaken one Rasa through another. We also offer ayurvedic cooking guidelines and daily routines for balancing sensory input and strengthening emotional health, including fasting from negative emotions as well as how to energize positive ones. As we master our emotions through the practice of Rasa Sadhana, we gain true control of our lives and our relationships with others.

Freedom from Emotional Blockages

shiva

At AkaalYoga, as we already discussed that how deep the science of emotions happens and works, hence, to live a happy and healthy life, it is important to free ourselves from old stuck up emotional energies. These energies do lie within our body at different sections and affect our life sub-consciously, while living or dealing with others. In our 6 days freedom from emotional Blockages retreat, participants will learn and undergo effectively designed techniques which duly work on physical & psychological bodies. Techniques includes different pressure and massage points in our body, usually at the back side and lower body parts, like hips, thighs, calves, toes, shoulders, chest, arms, lower back, etc. These techniques help in dilution and releasing of our blocked emotional energies and allow a free flow of blood circulation, an effective nervous system, an easy and a light body. When emotional blockages release out of the body and eating our very light ayurvedic cooked sattvik food, participants do see a huge change in their body and go deeper in their yogic and meditation practices.

Like Rasa Vigyan and Emotional Fasting, our techniques on, “getting freedom from emotional blockages” is one of the specialty of our Yoga Teacher Training Courses at Rishikesh.
